I was thrilled to have the chance to illustrate the words of one of my favorite secular idealists, playwright August Schulenburg. His immediate concerns include (1) the entire cosmos, (2) how we feel about each other, and (3) how we are all dealing with this whole "cosmos" thing. In his monologue "The Midas Touch," a golden feeling, the kind children dream of—a righteous, justified power—only destroys.
". . . He looked more than just beautiful, he looked just . . . like I had rendered the judgment of God on him and it was really good."
"Our jobs are to imagine lives as heroic arcs, and what you do every day becomes you, right, so it's natural that our delusions of grandeur would be grander than everyone else's."
Thank you to Kyle Greene and Nico Curtis for the issue design.Read more about this project.
